How do mobile phone masts connect to the phone network?

I’m interested to know about the mobile phone masts that are dotted all over the country, and in long lines along the motorways. The signal to & from your mobile phone obviously connects to these masts, but how is your call then routed into the main telephone exchanges? Do the phone companies put cables in to connect up to the masts, or are the calls beamed up to a satellite, and then into the network?
